CENTER FOR BYZANTINE STUDIES

 

The Centre for Byzantine Studies at Konstantin Preslavsky University of Shumen was established by Prof. È. Yordanov Ph.D., Dr. Habil. and other researchers and university lecturers, the Archeological and Historical Museum Shumen, St. Kliment Ohridsky University of Sofia, the Institute of History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, etc.

It was officially approved at a session of the Academic Council of Shumen University on October 28th 2005 (record of the session No 2).

Its main objective is to coordinate the scientific research of Shumen University byzantinists and medievalists, together with other national research centres and institutions and to solve theoretical and practical problems in the sphere of Byzantine and Medieval Studies. The Center aims at: 1. publishing its own scientific works; 2. collecting, using and spreading scientific information; 3. researching and analyzing the national and foreign achievements in Byzantine Studies; 4. establishing a specialized library and scientific archives.

Members of the Centre for Byzantine Studies are scientists, lecturers, researchers, Ph.D. students, associates of other scientific centres and institutions in Bulgaria and abroadThe Scientific Council at the Centre for Byzantine Studies has regular and extended membership.

1.      Individual research of the members of the Centre for Byzantine Studies

 

Since the Centre was established in 2007 its regular members have published the following works:

-       8 corpora editions and treatises 

-       90 papers and articles

-       3 reviews

 

2.      Organizing and participating in national and international scientific conferences

 

In 2005 – 2007 members of the Centre for Byzantine Studies took part in 9 international and 6 national scientific conferences. It is of main importance for proclaiming the Centre (and Shumen University respectively) that two of its members (Prof. Yordanov Dr. Habil. and Zhekova, Ph.D.) participated in 21st International Congress of Byzantine Studies, London 2006 and Prof. Yordanov – in the scientific conference in Komotini, Greece in 2007.

The Centre for Byzantine Studies is coorganizer and its members took active part with scientific papers as well in the International Symposium in memory of Dr. Vasil Haralanov (1907-2007): 100-Year Anniversary – Shumen, 13-15 September 2007. 50 lecturers took part in the Symposium, 18 of them foreigners – leading byzantinists.
